Deftones: Around The Fur (180g) LP | Vinyl
The California foursome Deftones build on the pure fury of their previous work with their follow-up album Around the Fur, which adds new, more sinister hues to their already harsh sound. Adrenaline was a passionate, aggressive song by the band. The first track on the album, “My Own Summer (Shove It),” introduces the musical concept, which alternates between quick, violent crunch and ghostly whispers and sinewy guitars. On “Headup,” Max Cavallero of Sepultura provides guitar and vocals, while on “MX,” singer Chino and Annalynn Cunningham—wife of Deftones drummer Abe—trade vocal lines in a caustic parody of the rock star mindset. Moreno is a vocal acrobat who works in a range of styles. His industrial-sounding breathy, manic recitations are contrasted with more sombre, contemplative passages on the album that highlight his talent for eerie melody. The massive, incredibly powerful, and incredibly nimble wall of sound behind him is guitarist Stephen Carpenter. As always on this album, when Deftones unleash their demonic wrath, Moreno’s vocal erupts into otherworldly screams that turn this fierce musical firestorm into a speeding juggernaut of rage.
