About the Mandolin
The mandolin, also spelled mandoline, is a small wooden stringed musical instrument in the lute family. It evolved in the 18th century in Italy and Germany from the 16th-century mandora. The modern form of the mandolin and proportions were strongly influenced by the maker Pasquale Vinaccia of Naples. When immigrants moved from Europe to the US, they took the mandolin with them so some of the most famous guitar makers started they’re manufacturing including Gibson. Founder Orvile Gibson started making mandolin family instruments in 1894 and founded the company in 1902 as the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Mfg. Co. Ltd.in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Modern arch top guitars which we arguably invented by Gibson took their inspiration from Mandolin design.
Thanks to its small size and portability, the mandolin was a popular instrument in Europe for soldiers. This served as the inspiration for the novel and subsequent film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.
